Interviewed by Linnéa Jungnelius
"A strategy is a concept. Until you crystallize those key priorities and put action behind them, strategy doesn’t mean anything." Ram Charan
Ram Charan, world-renowned business advisor, has spent decades inside boardrooms guiding CEOs and leadership teams through transformative decisions. Fortune calls him "the most influential consultant alive," and for good reason - his insights on leadership, strategy, and talent development have shaped the course of global businesses. Joining him in conversation is Kevin O’Neill, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Acertitude, a firm dedicated to unleashing human potential through executive search. Together, they delve into the forces shaping today’s business landscape and what separates great leaders from the rest.
The forces reshaping business today
The external landscape for CEOs is more complex than ever. According to Ram, four key forces are shifting the business environment:
- Global geopolitical disorder: AI is at the heart of both economic and military conflicts, requiring leaders to understand its implications.
- Technological transformation: AI is redefining industries - from biotech to aviation.
- The talent revolution: Companies must continuously develop talent to stay competitive.
- Economic volatility: Currency fluctuations and economic shifts demand sharper financial strategies.
In this environment, CEOs must move beyond traditional strategy and focus on what truly matters.
From strategy to focus
Ram argues that "strategy is out, and focus is in." While strategy is often abstract, focus is tangible - it’s about defining priorities and ensuring alignment at every level.
- Great CEOs don’t just articulate a strategy; they ensure their teams understand it, repeat it, and execute it.
- Clarity on mission is critical. As Kevin puts it, "One of my favorite CEOs repeats the mission incessantly to ensure alignment."
- Leaders must constantly assess whether their focus is still relevant - or if it’s already obsolete.
Winning teams require courageous leadership
High-performing teams don’t just happen; they are built through decisive leadership. According to Ram, the best CEOs:
- Give honest, realistic feedback and ensure it sticks.
- Foster collaboration while resolving conflicts swiftly.
- Provide clarity and consistency in their vision.
- Balance ego with humility - understanding that leadership is about the mission, not personal recognition.
Kevin emphasizes that teams look for vulnerability and authenticity in their leaders. "The CEOs who allow a real human connection with their teams are the ones thriving today."
The cost of delay in leadership decisions
A mis-hire in the CEO role can devastate a company’s performance. In private equity, a CEO mistake can drop IRR by as much as 82%, while getting the right leader early can increase returns sixfold. Kevin advises firms to:
- Assess leadership teams early - ideally pre-deal.
- Use data, external assessments, and market benchmarking.
- Move swiftly when leadership isn’t working - "Once you start questioning a leader’s fit, the horse has already left the barn."
Unleashing human potential
At the core of great leadership is the ability to unlock potential. Ram believes leaders should inspire individuals to see their own capacity for growth. "The greatest leaders excel in knowing the customer, getting the right people, and meeting their commitments."
Kevin sums it up best: "What teams truly want is a fierce advocate for the mission, someone who supports them, pushes them, and above all - remains human."
Final takeaway
Great leaders don’t just navigate complexity - they simplify it. By focusing on priorities, fostering alignment, and making bold decisions, they create the conditions for success. Whether in private equity, Fortune 500 firms, or emerging businesses, the principles remain the same: Clarity. Courage. Focus. Execution.
And as Ram reminds us: "Seek no credit. Do the best. And never become obsolete."
